The
Mount Carmel Baptist Mission is home to three churches in the Choluteca
area. The first church opened in 1998, courtesy of a church team
that visited from North Carolina. It's called Iglesia Bautista
Monte Carmelo -- Mount Carmel Baptist Church. It's
a celebration every Sunday morning when hundreds of neighborhood
children pack the house. They stand shoulder-to-shoulder as our
worship team leads the boys and girls in singing children's
gospel songs. But they're not just singing, they're acting out the
words of each song by moving their hands, arms and feet. Afterward,
the youngsters head off to Sunday school to learn stories from
the Bible and, perhaps, to sing more songs.

In
2003, the mission started a second church in a community
outside Choluteca called Fray Lacero. The name of the church is Casa
de Luz -- The Lighthouse -- and it's
dedicated to Fred Kenneth Hurd, Mary's late husband. The Wednesday and Sunday
night services come complete with music and a message.
On
the opposite side of town is the mission's newest church: Cristo
es la Roca – Christ is the
Rock. Our team attended its first service at the church in February 2005.
It was a Saturday night and this small, country church overflowed with grown-ups
and children alike.
